Explore the opportunities and challenges of teaching in the age of AI.
As emerging technologies continue to develop and shape the landscape of higher education, Duke instructors are exploring the pedagogical and ethical challenges raised by AI and finding creative ways to use AI in the classroom. Duke provides a variety of resources to faculty and instructors on effectively using AI to enhance teaching and learning. Instructors have the opportunity to guide students in thinking critically about AI and how it can be used to augment learning and thinking rather than replace it.
AI Ethics Toolkit for Instruction and Learning
In the spring of 2025, Duke Libraries and The Center for Teaching and Learning launched a project to explore ways of incorporating AI ethics into instruction and student learning. The research and design team co-created an easy-to-implement, student-centered AI Ethics Learning Toolkit to help instructors engage students in critical conversations about AI across disciplines.
The Impact of Generative AI on the Faculty Experience
The interdisciplinary cohort of the Duke Faculty Academy for 2024-2025 grappled with the role for faculty in the generative AI initiatives on campus and covered a wide range of perspectives. Discussions ranged from deep concern over the possible replacement of valued human behaviors to enthusiastic engagement with AI literacy and curricular use.
The group explored pressing questions around AI and the faculty experience, including:
- How should faculty approach AI literacy?
- How do we navigate the bias that is inherent in Generative AI?
- What does it mean to be human (e.g., uniqueness, creativity) in the age of AI?
