Faculty guidelines: Using AI in the classroom
Duke provides a variety of resources to faculty and instructors on effectively using AI to enhance teaching and learning. Check out these guidelines and policies from the Center for Teaching and Learning on integrating AI into the classroom.
Student guidelines: Can I use AI in my coursework?
The answer is: it depends! Per the Duke Community Standard, the unauthorized use of generative AI is considered academic misconduct. However, your instructor may permit or at times ask you to use generative AI in certain circumstances and assignments. In general, you should never use AI tools as a way to avoid learning – only to enhance it.

Research Guidelines: Using GenAI in Research
The potential impact of generative AI on research is undeniable. Despite the possibilities for greater efficiencies, researchers should carefully consider a variety of factors as they approach using these tools in their work. GenAI tools can be applied in many realms of research – idea development, proposal writing, manuscript preparation, simulated data generation and modeling, preparing for conferences, etc. But should researchers use it? How can they use it effectively? The Duke Office of Research Initiatives offers guidelines on using GenAI in research.
