AI in Healthcare
Duke researchers are leveraging AI to accelerate life-saving medical research, developing innovative AI technologies that improve patient care and outcomes, and pioneering governance frameworks for the responsible integration of AI in healthcare.
Developing Trustworthy and Responsible AI Governance
The Duke Health AI & Governance program streamlines health AI evaluation and governance, building robust frameworks and methodologies for responsible use and oversight while raising awareness of best practices within the community. Through strategic initiatives, collaborative partnerships, and thought leadership, the program ensures AI solutions are safe, effective, and contribute to reducing disparities while delivering high-quality care.
Featured Research: AI-Fueled Health Innovation
Creating Digital Twins to Save Lives
Amanda Randles developed software that creates digital twins, allowing for the creation of a physiologically accurate model of the movement of red blood cells throughout the body. The non-invasive 3D model can be used to simulate blood flow to determine the next step in a patient’s care.
“We used some of the world’s biggest supercomputers to do the simulations… Now, we’re connecting it to wearable devices like a Fitbit or an Apple Watch to try to remotely monitor what your blood flow is doing as you go about your daily activities, versus just at one single heartbeat,” says Randles

Duke Team Expands AI Tool to Predict Teen Mental Illness
A team at Duke University School of Medicine has received a $15 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to improve and expand an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that helps catch early signs of mental health problems in teenagers and adolescents. The AI model, called the Duke Predictive Model of Adolescent Mental Health (Duke-PMA), analyzes data on behavior, emotions, and brain function to identify kids at high risk for mental illness even before symptoms appear.
